THE INTEGRATED

CLOUD

With the advent of Drone Data Capture, we now have the ability to integrate drone point cloud data with laser scan point cloud data. This new “Integrated Cloud” has several advantages over laser scanning alone.

 

Advantages include:

  • Increased point density

  • Independent verification of scanned point cloud data, (an industry first)

  • Improved coverage: a 25% average increase in volumetric data collection using drones

  • Measurement of components and systems not measurable by any other system, due to line of sight limitations 

  • New capabilities for MOC applications

  • New capability to compare scan data against CAD models

  • New capability to manipulate point cloud data in the same way as CAD entities. 

New Point Cloud Comparison and Integration Applications

Until recently, point cloud software applications have been focused on the dominant, almost exclusive use of laser scans for the development of construction documents. There is little demand for scanning services in our industry other than the generation of construction documents by engineering firms.

 

Now there are new software applications that will support the integration of point cloud data from various sources and the integration of point cloud data with CAD model entities. These programs are powerful and effective but have not yet gained traction in our industry.

 

By utilizing this software to assemble a combination of dimensional resources, a self validating and comprehensive data set can be assembled, containing the following elements:

  • Laser scanned data

  • Drone photogrammetric point data

  • Hand-held camera point data

  • Total station point data

  • Fabricated component and trial fitting models via TGCE dimensional control methodology

  • As-built CAD model data

  • Detailed design CAD model data.

 

These data sets are currently available but are not currently utilized for post engineering dimensional control activities. In addition to project related dimensional control, this information, if made available, would become a valuable resource to all potential refinery users of dimensional data, primarily, maintenance, turnaround planning and operations

TGCE has the technology and manpower resources to organize, integrate, and access these complimentary dimensional data sets and make the information immediately available for any and all industrial applications. TGCE has the dimensional control work processes, instruments, and software applications to interrogate these integrated clouds and to validate and redline any construction document before fabrication and installation of the subject component.

 

Conclusions

These recent advances in dimensional control technology provide a powerful tool for controlling cost and schedule. These methods have also proven to improve safety by reducing field activities such as working in elevated structures to collect dimensional data. By using the most effective, high precision, dimensional technology for a given application, a zero-defect project can be obtained regardless of dimensional complexity.

 

Many project tasks that are traditionally performed on the job site today can now be fabricated and dimensionally verified in the fabricators shop before shipment. This reduction in project tasks performed on site is the best way to improve productivity and safety. TGCE strives to enhance safety by, providing the highest accuracy at the lowest cost while utilizing the latest in advances in measurement hardware and software.
